Lymphedema is a chronic swelling that can occur anywhere in the body but is most often found in the arms and legs. It happens when the lymphatic system is not draining fluid properly, causing it to accumulate.
Primary Lymphoedema is caused by developmental issues with the lymphatic vessels and is sometimes inherited.
Secondary lymphoedema is as a result of insult to the lymphatics this is as a result of lymph node removal, mastectomies, lumpectomies, radiation, infection or trauma to the limbs.
The gold standard for treatment of Lymphoedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
